Different types of motorized dinghies
When you start looking for a dinghy with an outboard motor, you quickly come to the conclusion that there are several different types. So you have dinghies with gasoline engines, electric motors, whisper motors, and you can even choose an inflatable motorboat. But what exactly are the differences? We would like to tell you more about them
Rubber boat with a gasoline engine
If you choose a dinghy with gasoline engine, you will be able to cruise for long periods of time without any problems. Also, a gasoline engine provides a lot of power, allowing you to sail fast. However, such an engine does make some noise and you should take into account gasoline costs.
Previously, the gasoline engine was basically the only option as an outboard motor for your rubber boat. But with today's technology, new solutions are being invented for everything. Therefore, it is good to know what the options are.
Rubber boat with an electric motor
Why buy a dinghy with an electric motor? In the field of motors we see more and more the electric motors passing by. When you are looking for a rubber powerboat, you also have the possibility to choose an electric motor. With an electric motor you retain as much power as with a gasoline engine.
The big advantage of this is that you can cruise almost as fast, but not be bothered by a noisy motor. However, electric motors are generally a bit pricier.
Rubber boat with a whisper motor
In addition to electric motors for dinghies, there are also special whisper motors. This produces even less noise than an electric motor and is a lot cheaper. So this is the ideal alternative to a cheap electric motor.
Since whisper motors are cheaper, it is logical that they also have some disadvantages compared to electric motors. For example, a whisper motor has less power and you will find that you cannot sail very fast.
Can I drive a dinghy with motor without a license?
In the Netherlands, you may drive a dinghy with motor from 18 years of age without a boating license up to a maximum speed of 20 km/h. Boats that go faster than 20 km/h are considered fast motorboats for which you need Vaarbewijs 1 (KVB1). For children between the ages of 12 and 18, the maximum speed is 13 km/h without a boating license.
Perhaps you are now asking yourself, 'what kind of dinghy with motor do I need? And how many HP should the maximum be?' Unfortunately, we cannot give a concrete answer to this question, as the number of HP depends on the size, weight and number of people on the boat.
In general, an indication is often given where a 3-meter long boat with a 4 HP outboard motor approximately meets the requirements. This is because with such a dinghy you will sail about 20 km/h. A dinghy with an engine of 6 HP will therefore quickly become too much, so keep this in mind.
